Raducanu to have surgery on both hands, will miss Roland-Garros and Wimbledon
The Briton, who had the first operation on Wednesday, will also have a small procedure on her ankle and is likely to miss the US Open too
Former US Open champion Emma Raducanu will miss this summer’s Roland-Garros and Wimbledon after deciding to have surgery on both hands to try to fix a long-standing problem.
The 20-year-old Briton announced on Wednesday that she is to have a “minor procedure” on both hands, having struggled with a bone issue in both hands.
Raducanu, who has struggled for fitness ever since she won the US Open in such stunning fashion in 2021, had the first operation on her right hand done on Wednesday and will have the left hand operated on in the coming weeks.
In a statement, the Briton said she would also use the time off to have “another minor procedure” due on her ankle.
While Raducanu said she expected to be out for “the next few months”, it’s likely she will also miss the US Open and may not play again until 2024.
Raducanu beset by injury problems since US Open win
The news is an obvious blow for Raducanu, who is already set to slip out of the world’s top 100.
Since winning the US Open in 2021, she has suffered from numerous injury problems. In addition to her hand injuries, which concerns a bone at the top of each hand, she has suffered ankle, abdominal and foot issues.
During that time, she has tried to play through the pain but her form has also suffered as she tried to cope with expectations. The 20-year-old lost in the second round at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon last year, before going out in round one at the US Open, as defending champion.
She suffered an ankle injury just before the Australian Open this year, where she lost in round two and though she made the last 16 in Indian Wells, in encouraging style, she lost her first match in both Miami and Stuttgart.
