Raducanu splits with coach Beltz after five-month association

The Brit will be supported by the Lawn Tennis Association while she transitions to a new training model

US Open champion Emma Raducanu has split with Torben Beltz, the German coach she had been working with for the past five months.

In a statement released, the 19-year-old Raducanu thanked Beltz, who worked for several years with former world No 1 Angelique Kerber, for their time together and said she would be supported by the Lawn Tennis Association in the interim while she finalises her new coaching set-up.

“I want to thank Torben for his coaching, professionalism and dedication over last half a year. He has a huge heart and I have enjoyed our strong chemistry during the time together. I feel the best direction for my development is to transition to a new training model with the LTA supporting in the interim,” the statement said.

Second coaching change for Raducanu since her US Open title

This is the second major coaching change that the British teen has undergone since her stunning win at the US Open in September, where she was ranked No 150 and came through the qualifiers to win her first Grand Slam title.

The Brit was working with Nigel Sears from April 2021 till July 2021. She then worked with Andrew Richardson, one of her youth coaches, on a temporary arrangement through her US Open.

However, immediately after the US Open breakthrough, Raducanu split with Richardson and decided not to extend their arrangement before finalizing on Beltz towards the end of the season.

Raducanu, currently ranked No 11 in the world, is currently in Madrid for the Mutua Madrid Open and LTA coach Iain Bates is with her this week. After a slow start to the season, the Brit will be hoping to continue some of the momentum she built in Stuttgart last week.

Raducanu won back-to-back matches in Stuttgart for just the second time since October to reach the quarter-finals where she pushed world No 1 Iga Swiatek in a tough 6-4 6-4 loss in what was her first pro match against a Top 10 ranked player.
