American Emma Navarro, the No 16 seed, won against Italian Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the second round of the Qatar Open at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha on Monday afternoon.
Navarro, ranked No 23, will face Belgian Elise Mertens next.
