Prague Open: Wildcard Samson stuns Siniakova to make quarter-finals
Laura Samson won against Katerina Siniakova 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Tuesday. She’ll play Russian qualifier Oksana Selekhmeteva in the next round
Local wildcard Laura Samson beat second seed Katerina Siniakova 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the Prague Open at the Sparta Prague Tennis Club.
Laura Samson will play Russian qualifier Oksana Selekhmeteva next.
The Czech won against Croat qualifier Tara Wurth (6-0, 6-2) in the previous round of the Prague tournament.
“I’m extremely surprised,” Samson said during her on-court interview after the win. “I didn’t go into it as favorite. I’m so proud of myself and I hope I will continue to play like this. As I was going into the second set I thought, ‘I have nothing to lose, I didn’t play good in the first set.’ I’m not really sure when (I thought I could win), I just believed myself in the third set.”
During the first round of the Prague tournament, Siniakova, ranked No 38, won against American qualifier Louisa Chirico (7-5, 4-6, 6-3).
