Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia moved into the last eight of the Porsche Grand Prix when Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 6 seed, retired at the Porsche-Arena in Stuttgart on Thursday evening.
Haddad Maia, ranked No 14, led 6-1, 3-1 when Rybakina, ranked No 7, pulled out at the Porsche-Arena in Stuttgart on Thursday evening.
The Brazilian will play Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No 3 seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, Beatriz Haddad Maia benefited from the abandonment of Italian Martina Trevisan (7-5, 1-1).
The Kazakh defeated German wildcard Jule Niemeier (7-5, 6-3) in the previous round of the Stuttgart Open.
