Iga Swiatek, the top seed, advanced to the last 8 of the Poland Open by defeating Romanian lucky loser Gabriela Lee 6-3, 6-2 at Legia Tenis & Golf in Warsaw on Thursday afternoon.
The world No 1 has now won 48 matches in 2022, already equalling the best tally reached by a female player in the entire 2021 season, by Anett Kontaveit and Ons Jabeur! It’s her 18th victory in a row on clay in 2022.
Swiatek, ranked No 1, will play Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 5 seed, on the next round.
The 21-year-old Pole won against Magdalena Frech (6-1, 6-2) in the previous round.
During the first round, Lee, ranked No 146, edged out Cypriot qualifier Raluca Georgiana Serban (3-6, 6-2, 7-5).
