Argentinian Maria Lourdes Carle moved into the second round of the Palermo Open by defeating German Tatjana Maria, the No 8 seed, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 at A.S.D. Country Time Club.
Carle, ranked No 93, will face Frenchwoman Chloe Paquet next.
