Osaka’s Indian Wells run ends as Mertens advances to last 16
Elise Mertens won against Naomi Osaka 7-5, 6-4 on Monday night and will play American Coco Gauff, the No 3 seed, in the next round

Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 24 seed, beat Japan’s Naomi Osaka 7-5, 6-4 to move into the last 16 of the Indian Wells at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Monday night.
Mertens, ranked No 28, will play American Coco Gauff, the No 3 seed, next.
The Belgian won against Chinese Xinyu Wang (6-1, 6-4) ahead of her victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Osaka, ranked No 287, won against Italian qualifier Sara Errani (6-3, 6-1) and Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 14 seed (7-5, 6-3).
