Japan Open: Lucky loser Lys advances to last eight
The German will play the winner of the match between Japanese qualifier Aoi Ito and Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, the No 8 seed, in the quarter-finals
German lucky loser Eva Lys advanced to the quarter-finals of the Japan Open by edging out American McCartney Kessler 7-6 (7), 3-6, 7-5 at the Utsubo Tennis Center on Wednesday.
Lys came from a break down twice in the final set to beat Kessler and reach the last eight.
Lys, ranked No 118, will play the winner of the match between Japanese qualifier Aoi Ito and Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, the No 8 seed, next.
In the previous round of the tournament, the 22-year-old German beat Colombian Camila Osorio (6-2, 6-3).
Kessler, ranked No 76, won against Japanese qualifier Ena Shibahara (6-4, 6-1) earlier in the week.
