German Tatjana Maria, the No 3 seed, edged out lucky loser Andrea Gamiz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to move into the quarter-finals of the Open delle Puglie on Wednesday afternoon.
Maria, ranked No 85, will play the winner of the match between Brazilian Laura Pigossi, the No 6 seed, and Italian qualifier Nuria Brancaccio next.
In the previous round, the 35-year-old German beat Italian Lisa Pigato (6-3, 6-4).
Gamiz, ranked No 356, won against Romanian lucky loser Ioana Loredana Rosca (6-2, 6-4) in the previous round.
