Olympic champion Belinda Bencic announces pregnancy
The Swiss No 1 announced via social media that she is expecting a baby with her long-time boyfriend Martin Hromkovic
Olympic champion Belinda Bencic has announced that she is pregnant with her first child.
“Expecting our little miracle soon! We can’t wait to meet you,” Bencic wrote on social media, revealing that she and long-time partner Martin Hromkovic are expecting their first baby.
The WTA has seen a flurry of highly successful returns to the tour for recent mothers, the most high-profile of whom were Elina Svitolina and Caroline Wozniacki.
Both returned to competitive action this year in superb style, with Wozniacki reaching the fourth round of the US Open, while Svitolina reached the quarter-finals and then the semi-finals of Roland-Garros and Wimbledon respectively.
Former Grand Slam champions Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber also both gave birth in 2023 and have announced their plans to return to the WTA in January.
The Swiss, who is currently ranked 14th in the world, last played in September at the San Diego Open where she lost in the round of 32 to Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
Her pregnancy means the 26-year-old could miss out on defending her gold medal title at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Judging by the number of hugely successful returns from maternity leave of mothers on the WTA tour recently, Bencic will no doubt be back competing for the highest titles again soon – this time, as a mum herself.
