American lucky loser Varvara Lepchenko defeated Austrian Sinja Kraus 7-6 (4), 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the Oeiras Ladies Open on Thursday afternoon.
Lepchenko, ranked No 258, will play French wildcard Kristina Mladenovic next.
In the previous round, the 37-year-old American won against Slovak Rebecca Sramkova, the No 8 seed (7-6 (5), 7-5).
Kraus, ranked No 225, beat Gabriela Knutson (7-6 (7), 6-1) in the previous round.
