Nottingham Open: Watson wins as three British women make semis of WTA event for first time since 1975
Heather Watson won against Viktorija Golubic 7-6 (2), 7-5 on Friday afternoon and will play wildcard Katie Boulter in the next round
Qualifier Heather Watson beat Swiss Viktorija Golubic 7-6 (2), 7-5 to move into the semi-finals of the Nottingham Open at Nottingham Tennis Centre on Friday.
Watson, ranked No 195, will face wildcard Katie Boulter next. With Boulter and Jodie Burrage also winning through, it’s the first time three British women have made the semis of the same WTA event since 1975.
Heather Watson won against German Jule Niemeier (6-4, 6-3) and German Tatjana Maria (6-4, 6-4) ahead of her victory.
In the previous rounds of the Nottingham tournament, Golubic, ranked No 150, won against Jil Teichmann (6-4, 6-3) and Croat Donna Vekic, the No 4 seed (6-4, 6-1).
