Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell reached the last 16 of the Nottingham Open by beating qualifier Emily Appleton 6-3, 7-5 at Nottingham Tennis Centre on Monday evening.
Birrell, ranked No 148, will face Italian qualifier Lucrezia Stefanini next.
