National Bank Open: Pliskova books spot in semi-finals against Haddad Maia
Karolina Pliskova edged out Qinwen Zheng 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Friday night. She’ll play Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in the next round

Czech Karolina Pliskova, the No 14 seed, edged out Chinese Qinwen Zheng 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals of the National Bank Open at the Aviva Centre in Toronto on Friday night.
Pliskova, ranked No 14, will face Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia next.
This is by far the best run by Pliskova since the beginning of the season. The Czech won against Barbora Krejcikova (6-3, 6-4), American Amanda Anisimova (6-1, 6-1) and Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 3 seed (6-1, 6-7 (9), 6-3) before this quarter-final.
It is her second semi-final since Strasbourg in May.
Zheng, ranked No 51, defeated Canadian wildcard Rebecca Marino (3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4), Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No 5 seed (6-1, 2-1 ret.) and Canadian Bianca Andreescu (7-5, 5-7, 6-2) in the previous rounds .
