Halep is the first to book spot in second round in Toronto

Romanian Simona Halep, the No 15 seed, defeated Croatian lucky loser Donna Vekic 6-0, 6-2 to move into the second round of the National Bank Open at the Aviva Centre in Toronto on Monday afternoon. Halep lost only eight points in the entire first set.

Halep will play the winner of the match between Chinese Shuai Zhang and Spaniard Cristina Bucsa next.

“The way I played gives me confidence,” the world No 15 commented. “It’s not about the result; more about how I played. I played fast, I’ve been aggressive; that’s what I try to do every day.”
