National Bank Open: Giorgi books spot in last 16
Camila Giorgi won against Elise Mertens 6-3, 7-5 on Wednesday evening and will play the winner of the match between No 7 seed Jessica Pegula and qualifier Asia Muhammad in the next round
Italian Camila Giorgi defeated Belgian Elise Mertens 6-3, 7-5 to reach the last 16 of the National Bank Open at the Aviva Centre in Toronto on Wednesday evening.
Giorgi, ranked No 29, will face the winner of the match between No 7 seed Jessica Pegula and qualifier Asia Muhammad next.
Ahead of her victory, the Italian won against No 9 seed Emma Raducanu (7-6, 6-2).
Mertens, ranked No 37, beat Hungarian Anna Bondar (7-6 (2), 6-1) in the previous round of the Canadian Open.
