“My goal by the end of the season is to break into the top 20, hopefully the top 10 in the world” – Andreescu
The former US Open champion has won back-to-back matches in only four of her 15 tournaments in 2023
Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu says she is not happy with her current ranking and aims to break into the world’s top 20, and perhaps climb even higher, by the end of the 2023 season.
Andreescu is ranked No 44 in the world and the last time she was ranked in the world’s top 20 was September 2021. Her peak came as world No 4 in October 2019 but since then she has been forced to miss an entire season (2020) due to injuries, and also take a break for her mental health at the end of the 2022 season.

I need to play more than three matches per event. I’m working hard, and it will pay off.
Bianca Andreescu
Andreescu has a 15-15 win-loss record in 2023 but has won back-to-back matches in only four of 15 events thus far – something that she will have to improve if she wants to meet her goal at the end of the year.
“I don’t like seeing that number next to my name, and I know I can be better than that,” Andreescu told the media in Montreal where she is playing the National Bank Open next week. “My goal by the end of the season is to break into the top 20, hopefully the top 10 in the world. That’s the ranking I should have. I have to take it tournament by tournament and have more matches under my belt to boost my confidence. I need to play more than three matches per event. I’m working hard, and it will pay off.”
Andreescu, the home favourite in Montreal, plays a qualifier in her first round but is not taking anything for granted. “The qualifiers already have experience here, they know the courts, the weather. They’re excited when they make it to the main draw. Personally, I haven’t had much momentum recently, except for Wimbledon, but that was already six weeks ago.”
If Andreescu does want to play more than three matches in Montreal, she will also have to negotiate past seventh seed Petra Kvitova in the second round and possibly 12th seed Belinda Bencic in the third round. And there’s no better place than her home tournament to kickstart her second half of the season.
