Mumbai Open: Hunter upsets Pigossi to reach quarter-finals
The Australian will face the winner of the match between Russian Alina Korneeva and Indian qualifier Shrivalli Bhamidipaty in the next round
Australian Storm Hunter defeated Brazilian Laura Pigossi, the No 5 seed, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the last eight of the WTA Mumbai Open at the Cricket Club of India on Wednesday.
Hunter, ranked No 150, will face the winner of the match between Russian Alina Korneeva and Indian qualifier Shrivalli Bhamidipaty next.
In the previous round of the tournament, the Australian benefited from the retirement of Hungarian qualifier Fanny Stollar (3-0).
Pigossi, ranked No 128, benefited from the retirement of Russian Ekaterina Makarova (6-1, 3-0) in her opening match.
