Top seed Jessica Pegula beat lucky loser Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4 to move into the last eight of the Mubadala Citi DC Open on Thursday evening.
It was a solid showing from Pegula against her compatriot, with the No 1 seed in Washington this year winning 72% of her first serve points and breaking Peyton’s serve five times en route to the one hour, 23 minute victory.
The win sets a block-busting quarter-final at the Mubadala Citi DC Open tomorrow, with Pegula, ranked No 4, will playing Ukrainian wildcard Elina Svitolina next, who has been one of the form women on the WTA Tour in the past month.
