Mubadala Citi DC Open: Kostyuk saves three match points against Andreescu
Marta Kostyuk edged out Bianca Andreescu 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) on Monday evening and will face second seed Caroline Garcia in the next round
Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk edged out Canadian wildcard Bianca Andreescu 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) to reach the last 16 of the Mubadala Citi DC Open on Monday evening.
The world No 34 was forced to do it tough and come back from a set down against the former Grand Slam winner Andreescu. Kostyuk managed to gain some earlier momentum in the second set racing out to a 3-0 lead, going on to win the set 6-3 and level the match at a set apiece.
However, in the third, Kostyuk was unable to hold on to her breaks of serve. The Ukrainian was up 4-2, but found herself down 4-5 and serving to stay in the match. She managed to do so, but not before facing three match points en route to a tiebreak, which she won 7-5.
Kostyuk, at a career high ranking of No 34, will play second seed Caroline Garcia next.
