Mubadala Citi DC Open: Davis upsets Stephens to book berth in last 16
Lauren Davis won against Sloane Stephens 7-6 (8), 3-6, 6-1 on Monday evening. She’ll face Swiss Belinda Bencic, the No 6 seed, in the next round
Qualifier Lauren Davis won against Sloane Stephens 7-6 (8), 3-6, 6-1 to reach the last 16 of the Mubadala Citi DC Open on Monday evening.
After the pair traded two tight sets, it was world No 54 Davis who was able to elevate her level when it mattered in the third set, and run away with the victory against former world No 3 Sloane Stephens. Davis broke twice in the final set, thanks to some aggressive returning of serve.
The win is Davis’s first in a WTA main draw since Roland-Garros, having exited early at the Rothesay Classic, Rothesay International, and Wimbledon over the past month.
Davis will face Swiss player Belinda Bencic, the No 6 seed, next, who benefited from Anastasia Potapova retiring at 6-5 in the first set of their opening round match.
