Canadian Open: Last local falls as Collins makes quarter-finals
Danielle Collins won against Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 6-3 on Friday night and will play Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, in the next round
American Danielle Collins defeated Canadian wildcard Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 6-3 to reach the last eight of the Canadian Open at Stade IGA in Montreal on Friday night.
Despite having to qualify for the event, Collins has been on a roll in Montreal, dispatching all three of her opponents in straight sets so far this week. In doing so, she has eliminated the final Canadian women standing in the tournament.
Collins, ranked No 48, will face Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, next.
Earlier in the tournament, the American won against Ukrainian Elina Svitolina (6-2, 6-2) and Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 8 seed (6-4, 6-2).
Fernandez, ranked No 81, won against American qualifier Peyton Stearns (6-3, 6-2) and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 11 seed (7-5, 5-7, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Rogers Cup.
