Monterrey Open: Sun advances to first WTA Tour-level semi-final
The Kiwi defeated Russian Erika Andreeva 6-4, 6-3 in the quarter-finals on Thursday
New Zealand’s Lulu Sun defeated Russian Erika Andreeva 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the semi-finals of the Monterrey Open at Sonoma Club on Thursday.
This is the first semi-final at the WTA Tour level for the Kiwi player, who had a stunning run to the Wimbledon quarter-finals as a qualifier in July.
Sun, ranked No 57, will face Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 3 seed, next.
In the previous rounds of the tournament, Sun won against Frenchwoman Chloe Paquet (7-6 (3), 6-3) and edged out Argentinian Maria Lourdes Carle (6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (2)).
Andreeva, ranked No 89, beat Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina (6-1, 6-4) and American Danielle Collins, the top seed (1-6, 6-3, 6-3) earlier in the week.
