Monterrey Open: Egypt’s Sherif saves matchpoints to beat Wang and reach quarters
Sherif will play the winner of the match between Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the top seed, and Spaniard Nuria Parrizas Diaz in the next round
Egypt’s Mayar Sherif, the No 7 seed, edged out Chinese Xinyu Wang 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 to advance to the last eight of the Monterrey Open at the Estadio GNP Seguros on Thursday.
Sherif saved two matchpoints in the second set tiebreak before coming back to win in two hours and 36 minutes.
Sherif, ranked No 53 in the world, will face the winner of the match between Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the top seed, and Spaniard Nuria Parrizas Diaz next.
In the previous round of the Monterrey tournament, the Egyptian benefited from the retirement of Colombian Camila Osorio (7-6 (5), 4-2).
Wang, ranked No 65, beat American qualifier Sachia Vickery (6-3, 6-4) in the first round of the tournament.
