Monterrey Open: Alexandrova reaches semi-finals, will face Sun
Ekaterina Alexandrova defeated Yue Yuan in straight sets in the quarter-finals on Thursday
Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova reached the semi-finals of the Monterrey Open by beating China’s Yue Yuan 7-5, 7-6 (3) at Sonoma Club on Thursday.
Alexandrova and Yuan were locked in a battle for nearly two hours as they showcased discipline on the court. During the match, the Russian registered three break-point conversions against her opponent’s two.
In the second set tiebreaker, Yuan saved a match point but Alexandrova converted the second with an ace to claim the win.
Alexandrova, ranked No 30, will face New Zealand’s Lulu Sun next.
In her quarter-final effort, Sun overcame top-seed (Danielle Collins) slayer Erika Andreeva in straight sets. In the previous rounds, she beat Argentina’s Maria Lourdes Carle and France’s Chloe Paquet.
Alexandrova, on the other hand, has played one match lesser as she received a bye in the first round as the third seed. She defeated Mexico’s Renata Zarazua in the second round.
Alexandrova and Sun will fight on Friday for a spot in the final. Notably, it will be their second on-tour meeting, with the Russian leading 1-0 in the head-to-head from their previous duel in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Korea Open.
