American Taylor Townsend, the No 4 seed, defeated Cypriot Raluka Serban 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the second round of the Midland Open at the Greater Midland Tennis Center on Tuesday evening.
Townsend, ranked No 66, will play Ukrainian Yulia Starodubtsewa next.
