Mirra Andreeva names unlikely ally on WTA Tour
The teen revealed the one female tennis player reached out to support her after her initial breakthrough
17-year-old Mirra Andreeva has snatched headlines over the past month, rocketing up the rankings with back-to-back WTA 1000 titles.
Not since the Williams sisters has a teenager found success on the WTA Tour so young, so fast, so consistently, and shown such obvious promise.
Andreeva’s breakthrough tournament came in 2023 at the Madrid Open, when she made her debut on the main tour as a 15-year-old and beat three top-50 players en route to the round of 16.
But the Russian teen has revealed a surprising revelation about her initial breakout as a professional, saying that only one other female player reached out to encourage her after the Madrid tournament.
“I can name one player,” Andreeva said, when asked ahead of the 2025 Miami Open who has supported her on tour. “It was my first tournament in Madrid and it was kind of a breakthrough tournament and I lost in the round of 16.
“After – I think even during the tournament – I got a message from Bianca Andreescu.
“She was actually the first one and I think she was the only female tennis player that texted me
“She said that if I need any advice or, I don’t know, any support, I can always reach out to her and we can have a chat or a call or whatever. She was super nice about it and she also texted me after I won the tournament, she told me some nice words.”
Andreescu is a 24-year-old Canadian tennis player, who made a breakout of her own when she stormed to the US Open title in 2019 as a 19-year-old.
