Miami Open: Trevisan defeats Ostapenko, possible quarter-final against Rybakina awaits
Martina Trevisan defeated Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-3 on Monday. She’ll play the winner of the match between Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 10 seed, and Belgian Elise Mertens in the next round
Italian Martina Trevisan, the No 25 seed, beat Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 24 seed, 6-3, 6-3 to move into the last 8=eight of the Miami Open at the Hard Rock Stadium on Monday.
Trevisan, ranked No 24, will play the winner of the match between Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 10 seed, and Belgian Elise Mertens next.
This is the first time Trevisan has reached the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 event, and she is the first Italian to get to this stage in Miami since 2013, when Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci both did it.
In the previous rounds of the Miami tournament, the Italian won against Japanese qualifier Nao Hibino (6-4, 6-3) and edged out American Claire Liu (4-6, 7-5, 6-4).
Ostapenko, ranked No 22, won against Swede qualifier Mirjam Bjorklund (6-3, 6-4) and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 13 seed (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
