Rybakina keeps on rolling, advances to Miami Open quarter-finals
Indian Wells champion Elena Rybakina is through to the last eight after defeating Elise Mertens in straight sets on Monday. Martina Trevisan is next up for Rybakina.
Elena Rybakina’s bid for the Sunshine Double is alive and well.
Rybakina, who triumphed in Indian Wells a little more than a week ago, booked her spot in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open by beating Elise Mertens 6-4, 6-3 on Monday afternoon. The Kazakh is now three wins away from going back-to-back at the two spring 1000-point tournaments in the United States, which would mark the second consecutive year in which it has happened (Iga Swiatek won both Indian Wells and Miami in 2022).
Standing in Rybakina’s way of the semis is No 25 seed Martina Trevisan. Rybakina preceded Monday’s victory with wins over Anna Kalinskaya (7-5, 4-6, 6-3) and No 21 seed Paula Badosa (3-6, 7-5, 6-3).
Mertens, ranked No 39, had previously defeated American Alycia Parks (6-1, 6-4), Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 8 seed (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) and Croat Petra Martic, the No 29 seed (6-4, 6-3).
