American Jessica Pegula, the No 5 seed, advanced to the last 16 of the Miami Open by beating Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 31 seed, 7-5, 6-4 at the Hard Rock Stadium.
Pegula, ranked No 5, will play American Emma Navarro, the No 20 seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the American benefited from the abandonment of Chinese Lin Zhu (6-4, 4-1).
Fernandez, ranked No 35, won against Colombian qualifier Emiliana Arango (6-4, 6-2) in the previous round of the Miami tournament.
