Miami Open: Collins impresses in straight sets win over Cirstea
Danielle Collins won against Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 6-2 on Monday night and will play Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 23 seed, in the next round
American Danielle Collins defeated Romanian Sorana Cirstea, the No 19 seed, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the last 8 of the Miami Open at the Hard Rock Stadium on Monday night.
Earlier this year, Collins announced that this would be her final year playing tennis on the WTA Tour. The decision seems to have freed up the 30-year-old, with Collins playing some of her best tennis over the past few months. Her win over Cirstea was a second top 25 victory in 2024, and sends her through to her second WTA 1000 quarter-final of the year.
Collins, ranked No 53, will play Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 23 seed, next – a player whom she has won all six sets against in her career so far.
Earlier in the tournament, the American won against lucky loser Bernarda Pera (3-6, 6-1, 6-1), Russian Anastasia Potapova, the No 30 seed (6-2, 6-2) and Russian Elina Avanesyan (6-1, 6-2).
Cirstea, ranked No 24, beat American Sloane Stephens (6-2, 6-1) and Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 10 seed (7-5, 6-2) in the previous rounds of the Miami tournament.
