Merida Open: Top seed Zarazua reaches quarter-finals, faces Sonmez next
The Mexican woman defeated Maja Chwalinska 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the second round on Thursday
Mexican Renata Zarazua, the top seed, advanced to the quarter-finals of the Merida Open by winning against Pole qualifier Maja Chwalinska 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 at the Yucatan Country Club on Thursday.
Zarazua, ranked No 62, will face Zeynep Sonmez next. This will mark the first time that the Mexican player is through to the quarter-finals at the WTA level in 2024.
In the previous round of the tournament, the Mexican defeated American wildcard Akasha Urhobo (7-5, 6-2). Today’s win was her sixth this season at the WTA level and she is seeded No 1 for the first time in her career at a WTA singles event.
Chwalinska, ranked No 175, won against Canadian Rebecca Marino (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) earlier in the week.
