Mérida Open: American McNally books spot in semi-finals; gets Peterson next
The world No 92 defeated Kimberly Birrell 6-4, 6-3 in Friday’s quarter-finals
American Caty McNally reached the semi-finals of the Mérida Open by defeating Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell 6-4, 6-3 at the Yucatan Country Club on Friday.
McNally, ranked No 92 in the world, will face Swedish qualifier Rebecca Peterson, who upset top seed Magda Linette 6-2, 6-4 in another quarter-final.
Ahead of her win on Friday, the 21-year-old American won against Chinese Lin Zhu, the No 3 seed (7-6 (3), 6-7 (5), 6-1) and wildcard Katie Volynets (6-3, 6-0).
Birrell, ranked No 133, had defeated against Hungarian Anna Bondar (7-6 (8), 6-1) and Chinese Xiyu Wang (6-3, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
