Mérida Open: Korneeva through to semi-finals

Russian Alina Korneeva moved into the semi-finals of the Mérida Open by defeating Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-3, 6-1 at the Yucatan Country Club on Friday.
Korneeva, ranked No 254, will face Zeynep Sonmez next.
The 17-year-old Russian won against American Alycia Parks (6-3, 6-1) and No 5 seed Anna Blinkova (7-5, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds of the Mérida tournament, Sorribes Tormo, ranked No 103, beat Mexican wildcard Ana Sofia Sanchez (6-2, 6-1) and edged out Italian Lucrezia Stefanini (6-4, 1-6, 6-4).
