Mérida Open: Giorgi wins the title
Camila Giorgi lifted the trophy on Monday night against Rebecca Peterson
Italian Camila Giorgi beat Swede qualifier Rebecca Peterson 7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-2 to win the Mérida Open title at the Yucatan Country Club on Monday night.
Giorgi, ranked No 68, defeated Egyptian Mayar Sherif, the No 6 seed (6-4, 6-2), Spaniard Nuria Parrizas Diaz (7-6 (5), 6-2), American Sloane Stephens, the second seed (6-0, 6-0) and Czech Katerina Siniakova, the No 4 seed (7-5, 7-6 (2)) ahead of her victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Peterson, ranked No 140, beat Argentinian Nadia Podoroska (6-3, 7-5), American Alycia Parks, the No 5 seed (6-4, 6-2), Pole Magda Linette, the top seed (6-2, 6-4) and American Catherine McNally (6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-4).
