Italian Camila Giorgi beat Egyptian Mayar Sherif, the No 6 seed, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the second round of the Mérida Open at the Yucatan Country Club on Monday night.
Giorgi, ranked No 68, will face Spaniard Nuria Parrizas Diaz next.
