Merida Open: Giorgi double bagels Stephens to reach semi-finals
The Italian will face Czech Katerina Siniakova, the No 4 seed, in the semi-final
Italy’s Camila Giorgi dished out a double bagel to former US Open champion Sloane Stephens, the No 2 seed, to move into the semi-finals of the Mérida Open at the Yucatan Country Club on Friday
Giorgi took only 47 minutes to beat Stephens 6-0, 6-0, dropping just 20 points during the contest and did not face a single break point on her serve. The Italian earned 12 break chances on Stephens’ serve and was able to convert six of them.
With the win, the Italian has set up a semi-final showdown against fourth seed Katerina Siniakova. The Czech defeated Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, the No 7 seed, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 in another quarter-final.
Giorgi has not dropped a set this week in Merida, having beaten Egyptian Mayar Sherif, the No 6 seed (6-4, 6-2) and Spaniard Nuria Parrizas Diaz (7-6 (5), 6-2) in her previous matches.
Stephens, ranked No 41, had won against French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean (6-1, 6-3) and edged out Russian lucky loser Varvara Gracheva (5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (5)) earlier in the tournament.
