Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell reached the last 8 of the Mérida Open by winning against Chinese Xiyu Wang 6-3, 6-2 at the Yucatan Country Club on Wednesday night.
Birrell, ranked No 133, will play the winner of the match between Catherine McNally and wildcard Katie Volynets next.
The Australian defeated Hungarian Anna Bondar (7-6 (8), 6-1) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round, Wang, ranked No 62, edged out American Alison Riske-Amritraj, the No 8 seed (7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (1)).
