Madrid Open: Swiatek battles back to beat Haddad Maia and seal semi-final place
Iga Swiatek defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 on Tuesday and will play the winner of the match between American Madison Keys, the No 18 seed, and Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No 8 seed, in the next round
Iga Swiatek was made to work hard as she recovered to beat Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 11 seed, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 and seal a semi-final place in the Madrid Open at the Caja Magica on Tuesday afternoon.
The world No 1 led 4-1 in the first set but Haddad Maia won five straight games to take the set, before Swiatek took control, winning eight games in a row and finishing things off in style.
Swiatek will play the winner of the match between American Madison Keys, the No 18 seed, and Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No 8 seed, next.
The 22-year-old Pole won against Chinese Xiyu Wang (6-1, 6-4), Romanian Sorana Cirstea, the No 27 seed (6-1, 6-1) and Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo (6-1, 6-0) ahead of her victory.
In the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament, Haddad Maia, ranked No 14, won against Italian qualifier Sara Errani (6-3, 6-2), American Emma Navarro, the No 19 seed (6-4, 6-4) and Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 5 seed (6-4, 6-4).
