Madrid Open: Top seed Swiatek crushes Sorribes Tormo to reach quarter-finals
Iga Swiatek won against Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-1, 6-0 on Monday and will face Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 11 seed, in the next round
Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, moved into the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open by winning against Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-1, 6-0 at the Caja Magica on Monday.
Swiatek now has a 4-0 record against Sorribes Tormo, and a 20-2 record this year against players ranked outside the Top 20.
I’m happy with the performance. It was really solid, and I’m happy with the way I adjusted to Sara’s game.
“I feel like I already knew how she plays, after these couple of matches we have played in Beijing and United Cup,” Swiatek said. “I took a lesson from that, and I just played really efficiently.”
She has also dropped only eight games across the three matches she has thus far played this week.
Swiatek, ranked No 1, will play Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 11 seed, next.
The 22-year-old Pole beat Chinese Xiyu Wang (6-1, 6-4) and Romanian Sorana Cirstea, the No 27 seed (6-1, 6-1) ahead of her victory.
In the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament, Sorribes Tormo, ranked No 55, won against American qualifier Bernarda Pera (7-5, 6-2), Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the No 16 seed (6-3, 7-5) and Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, the No 23 seed (7-6, 6-3).
