Swiatek whips Keys, into second Madrid final
Iga Swiatek won against Madison Keys 6-1, 6-3 on Thursday. She’ll face the winner of the match between Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 4 seed, and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, in the final
Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, defeated American Madison Keys, the No 18 seed, 6-1, 6-3 to reach the final of the Madrid Open at the Caja Magica on Thursday afternoon.
The top seed needed just 71 minutes to improve to 3-1 against the American and 70-10 lifetime on her beloved clay.
Swiatek, ranked No 1, will bid for her 20th WTA title against the winner of the match between Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 4 seed, and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, next.
The 22-year-old Pole won against Chinese Xiyu Wang (6-1, 6-4), Romanian Sorana Cirstea, the No 27 seed (6-1, 6-1), Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo (6-1, 6-0) and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 11 seed (4-6, 6-0, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament, Keys, ranked No 20, beat Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu (7-6 (3), 7-6 (6)), Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 15 seed (6-2, 6-3), No 3 seed Coco Gauff (7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4) and Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No 8 seed (0-6, 7-5, 6-1).
