Madrid Open: Garcia out, Sherif moves into fourth round
Mayar Sherif beat Caroline Garcia 7-6 (2), 6-3 on Saturday evening
Egyptian Mayar Sherif defeated Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 5 seed, 7-6 (2), 6-3 to advance to the fourth round of the Madrid Open at the Caja Magica on Saturday evening.
Sherif, ranked No 59, will play Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 24 seed, next.
Earlier in the tournament, the Egyptian benefited from the abandonment of Italian Camila Giorgi (4-6, 6-4) and won against Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, the No 30 seed (6-2, 7-6 (3)).
Garcia, ranked No 5, won against Kazakh Yulia Putintseva (6-3, 6-4).
