Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus reached the second round of the Madrid Open by defeating wildcard Brenda Fruhvirtova 7-5, 6-3 at the Caja Magica on Tuesday.
Rus, ranked No 47, will face No 3 seed Coco Gauff next.
