German Jule Niemeier advanced to the third round of the Madrid Open by upsetting Czech Petra Kvitova, the No 10 seed, 7-6 (9), 6-1 at the Caja Magica on Thursday.
Niemeier, ranked No 67, will face the winner of the match between Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 24 seed, and Canadian Rebecca Marino next.
Ahead of her victory, the German won against Chinese Xinyu Wang (6-4, 6-2).
