Madrid Open: Mertens into third round
Elise Mertens won against Rebecca Marino 6-3, 6-1 on Thursday afternoon. She’ll play German Jule Niemeier in the next round
Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 24 seed, advanced to the third round of the Madrid Open by beating Canadian Rebecca Marino 6-3, 6-1 at the Caja Magica on Thursday afternoon.
Mertens, ranked No 29, will face German Jule Niemeier next.
In the previous round of the Madrid tournament, Marino, ranked No 79, won against Chinese Lin Zhu (7-6 (1), 6-4).
