Croat Petra Martic, the No 27 seed, beat German qualifier Laura Siegemund 7-6 (6), 6-3 to advance to the round of 32 at the Madrid Open at the Caja Magica on Friday.
Martic, ranked No 33, will face Russian Anna Kalinskaya next.
In the previous round of the Madrid tournament, Siegemund, ranked No 128, won against Argentinian Nadia Podoroska (3-6, 6-3, 6-3).
