Madrid Open: Gauff tops Yastremska to reach round of 16
Coco Gauff defeated Dayana Yastremska 6-4, 6-1 on Saturday evening. She’ll play American Madison Keys, the No 18 seed, in the next round
American Coco Gauff, the No 3 seed, won against Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, the No 31 seed, 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the last 16 of the Madrid Open at the Caja Magica on Saturday evening.
The American ties her best Madrid result, and has now won 29 of her last 31 matches against players ranked outside of the top 30.
Gauff, ranked No 3, will face American Madison Keys, the No 18 seed, next. Gauff has split four previous meetings with Keys, with the American taking their last tilt, in 2023 on the grass at Eastbourne.
The 20-year-old American defeated Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus (6-0, 6-0) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round of the Madrid tournament, Yastremska, ranked No 34, edged out Colombian qualifier Emiliana Arango (0-6, 7-5, 6-4).
