Madrid Open: Garcia advances to third round
Caroline Garcia beat Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday evening and will face Egyptian Mayar Sherif in the next round

Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 5 seed, won against Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-4 to reach the third round of the Madrid Open at the Caja Magica on Thursday evening.
Garcia, ranked No 5, will face Egyptian Mayar Sherif next. The Frenchwoman gets her first win in four tries against Putintseva and improves to 19-9 on the season.
Putintseva, ranked No 51, defeated American Claire Liu (6-4, 6-4) in the previous round of the Madrid tournament.
