Russian Mirra Andreeva won against Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 12 seed, 7-6 (2), 6-4 to move into the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open at the Caja Magica on Monday.
Andreeva, ranked No 43, will play the winner of the match between American Danielle Collins, the No 13 seed, and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, next.
Earlier in the tournament, the 17-year-old Russian beat American Taylor Townsend (4-6, 6-1, 7-5), No 29 seed Linda Noskova (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) and No 7 seed Marketa Vondrousova (7-5, 6-1).
Paolini, ranked No 13, won against Andorran wildcard Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva (6-0, 6-1) and Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 21 seed (6-3, 6-2) in the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament.
